Corps, Cars, and the Clinic

Brad is in Texas enjoying the company of his former coworkers. I know he enjoys it there and I am thankful that he is able to go relatively frequently to stay connected with them. Some day I will go back with him, but if I'm being totally transparent, I think there's a small part of me that is afraid if I go, he'll ask me to move back. I know it sounds crazy, but we're obviously not above giving cities a second chance!

While he has been gone, I have been working on color guard stuff and making a tactile mural with the help of a couple friends (Thanks Chad and Jessica)! I will upload a picture once it is totally complete so you can see our masterpiece! For the most part, it was a pretty quiet few days, until...

Friday morning I further injured a bum knee (that I'd hurt painting the tactile mural that I then mostly covered up). I did this just before embarking on a trip to Tifton and then Valdosta for a fun-filled DCI day! For those of you who do not know, DCI stands for Drum Corps International. At the risk of grossly oversimplifying, it is akin to professional marching band. We decided to go early and watch a fantastic corps, Phantom Regiment, practice. Long story short, we took a tour of the Tift County School System and finally found them somewhat by chance. It was ridiculously hot and my knee was killing me, so we only stayed a little while (long enough for me to get some strange heat rash, though...still not sure what that was all about, but I really felt like Carla--randomly splotchy. Love you, Carla!). After getting some dinner, we then travelled to Valdosta for the actual competition.

Prior to the DCI portion of the competition, two All Age Corps performed. This was very exciting for us because we know three members of one of them: CorpVets. Keith, snare player who is our percussion instructor; Brandon, drum major who is our guard writer; and Taylor, tenor player who is a former PC band member. Their scores said it all: CorpsVets - 72.113 Sun Devils - 57.713. They did such a fantastic job and I walked away extremely proud of them and happy to have Brandon and Keith as part of our staff (Now if we could only raise enough money to pay them what they're truly worth)!

The night was full of corps who had some really great things going on. No one 'swept me off my feet', but it was a small show so I am encouraged to see what happens at the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta in a few weeks. This day of corps culminated in a crazy ride home, summed up only by a couple of mixed CD's (Chad mix and Jess Mix--both only good for road trips) and tons of conversation (it's amazing what comes up at 1:00 in the morning)! I was dropped off at 1:45ish and was WIDE AWAKE!!!!

I finally went to sleep about 2:30 only to be awakened every 20-30 minutes by my swollen knee and allergy issues (good thing Brad wasn't home or I'd have really been keeping him awake). It was a restless night, but that's okay because my day had to begin at 6:30 anyway for the band's car wash! My knee was so bad that I spent the day sitting in my car collecting money. It may seem like the perfect setup (and believe me, it was nice not to be sunburned and drenched) but I really felt awful for not contributing. The kids had a great time and they made some pretty good money, so I feel good about the fundraiser!

After the car wash, I went to the doctor just to check out my knee issues so that I'll be as ready for band camp as possible on Monday. After some poking, prodding, and X-rays, the verdict is that I should do exactly what my sister (THE RN!!!!!!!!!!) told me to do. Moral? Listen to your sister--she'll save you and your insurance company some serious cash!
