Ms. Bug Gets a Job

Sounds like a nice title for a new children's book, right? Well, it's even better than that--it's a declaration that my sister has a JOB!!

Okay, let me take a couple steps back. My sister, Katie, was called "Ms. Bug" for a great portion of her life by one of our favorite cousins (a play off of the name of the insect: katydid). Katie has been my role model for the last (almost...but not quite) 27 years. I have learned from her, lived through her, done everything possible to follow in her footsteps. People tell me that I must be a caring individual to be a special ed teacher, but the truth is that I get a lot of that from her: Katie always has a cause. She is always rooting for the underdog. For example, when we were young, we used to follow racing with my Papaw and Papa. She would pull for Wally Dallenbach who very rarely finished a race. A few hours after the race was over, she would ask Papa how Wally did and he would tell her, "He's still out there racing!" I guess her heart just went out to him for his efforts. True, I have put my sister on a pedestal throughout life. I know that she has faults (sorry, Katie, but it's true) but she displays so much of what I want to become (other than a democrat, but that's a totally different story). :-)

Not long ago, Katie completed the nursing program and is an RN! Let me tell you, I thought that I had a lot of work going through graduate school, but I've never seen someone work as hard and long and study as intensely as Katie as she went through school. She maintained a full time job, went to all types of different clinicals, had various labs and maintained amazing grades in her classes...not to mention maintaining relationships with friends, family, and her awesome hubby. I mean, I have been struggling with balance in my life, but this chic's schedule was WAY more full than my own.

Recently, she and her husband, Peter, moved to Sewanee, Tennessee so that he can go to seminary. I'm so thankful to have them a little bit closer! The tough thing is that she was pretty much a shoe-in to become an RN at her old place of employment. She had been there for 11 years and had a very good reputation for hard work. So, the transition to the unknown was difficult. We have been praying that she would find a good job. She went Wednesday for an interview and was hired on the spot! Even without experience, she made such an impression that they knew she was the one for them! Congratulations to my amazing sister! You're going to be a fantastic nurse!

You have always been so supportive of me even when I have made decisions that you disagree with (like being a democrat!) and you continue to be a great source of inspiration to me. I love you!! -Katie
